Blandet By/Mixed City - DAC (School Assignment) 2023

DAC (Danish Arcitecture Center) is an architectural museum and a cultural institution in Copenhagen, Denmark. In May 2024, DAC hosted an exhibition called "Copenhagen in Common," which takes a closer look at some of the places that define Copenhagen from an architectural perspective.

This project was made to convert the physical exhibition into a digital experience. The theme of the exhibition, mixed city, showcased different places in Copenhagen, each with distinct and significant cultural meaning to the city's residents.

Solution

Multiculturalism defines the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. In this solution, we took the starting point in the metaphor of "a mixed bag". We transformed eberu location in the exhibition into a shape with a texture, symbolizing the architectural space of that location (for instance, a pinkish cracked brick shape to represent "Fuglereden," an old pink bar with a significant historical role in Nordvest, Copenhagen). The theme of a mixed city is visualized through these shapes, which are also used as navigation on the website.

As you explore the website you collect more and more shapes which you can later explore in depth.

In addition to the individual locations presented in the exhibition, we also created interactive sections on the website. For instance, a place where users could contribute with their personal hidden gem around the city (a wall of hearts). This gave the same sense of community as experiencing a physical exhibition in a room full of strangers.
